Much of her weaponry is standard hardware: swords, daggers, bow and arrows, axes and spears. She carries the Sword of Athena—also known as the God Killer in the 2017 Wonder Woman film. The name is taken from a sword introduced to the DC Universe in the Deathstroke comic book. In the film, it is believed that the weapon possesses a magical ability to work on invulnerable beings, and it is engraved with the following: “Life is killing life all the time and so the goddess kills herself in the sacrifice of her own animal.” The same quote is also etched around the edge of her shield. This quote carries echoes of mystical wisdom, but the derivation isn’t ancient: It’s from Joseph Campbell, author of Goddesses: Mysteries of the Feminine Divine.

Perhaps Wonder Woman’s greatest weapons come from within. It should be no surprise that this is the point of her titular film. Many of her battles are won by her sense of humor and her cleverness as she pulls off a secret identity and takes on jobs ranging from archeology to fashion design. Her perception is razorsharp, not requiring the lasso of truth to recognize deception and injustice. Amazon or not, she fights for women and children, the downtrodden and the helpless. She’s a demigoddess and a princess with a righteous claim to divine wisdom.
